The district’s board of trustees announced Friday that Dr. Bethany A. Giles has been appointed as the new superintendent following a unanimous vote during a special board meeting.
Dr. Giles was named interim superintendent in May after Keith Price announced his resignation. She was one of four finalists considered for the job.
“I am grateful to our Board for their leadership, support, and vote of confidence. I believe this opportunity is a reflection of uncommon favor. It is a reminder to me of the immense responsibility that comes with leading this amazing district – the one that has been home and continues to be home. I accept the responsibility to serve, uplift, and lead boldly – our home, our school, our community. But this is not just about me. It is about us working together in harmony to do what is right for our most precious commodity, our children. Together, we will lead our district forward,” said Dr. Giles.
The South Carolina School Boards Association facilitated an extensive search for a new superintendent. The process, according to the district, was designed to ensure transparency and community involvement.
Multiple input sessions were held with district employees, parents, and local stakeholders, as well as a meet-and-greet event where the community had an opportunity to meet with the finalists.
“I want our parents to know that we are accessible. We are available please reach out to us and anything we can do to make the learning environment or the learning experience better not only for the kids but them as well,” said Giles.
Giles has 23 years of experience in public education, all with the Georgetown County school system, and is a Georgetown County native. She earned degrees from South Carolina State University and The Citadel and received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from S.C. State University.

GEORGETOWN — Winyah Bay Brewing Company celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 29, making it the first craft production brewery in Georgetown.
The brewery previously operated inside the popular restaurant Buzz’s Roost. It announced it would be expanding to its new location at 932 Front St. earlier this year.
Winyah Bay still offers many of the same beers its loyal customers have come to love, but its expansion has allowed for a larger, more professional brewing system, plans for distribution and new craft beers.
One new beer, which was fermenting as Runyan spoke with The Post and Courier, will be dedicated to the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show. Runyan didn’t share more details for fear of jinxing the beer’s release.
Winyah Bay is a space that’s been missing from the community, Runyan said. He was confident about opening the new location, even while craft breweries across the country have been shutting down.
“We knew that Georgetown really wanted this operation and they wanted to see a craft brewery come to town,” he said.
Baxter's Brew House in Georgetown also makes craft beer, but the beer parlor is primarily for guests staying at the inn, according to its website.
Main Street Director Al Joseph agreed that Georgetown has been lacking the kind of brewery environment offered by Winyah Bay. He also noted there was an increased interest in craft beer at Georgetown’s most recent Food, Beer and Wine Festival. He said he believes Winyah Bay is a good response to that.
“Winyah Bay is going to fill a niche that we’re missing,” he said.
Joseph said the brewery will also be a “definite attraction” that will draw visitors and new businesses to Georgetown. Around nine new businesses have opened in the historic district this year. The number will likely continue to grow, Joseph said.
Runyan said the brewery is already starting to attract people to the area. In addition to loyal customers established at its location in Buzz’s Roost, he's seen plenty of new faces at the brewery. He said people traveling from Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island and Charleston have all come to sample Georgetown's craft brews.
Runyan and his partners plan to bring a food truck to the brewery and convert its courtyard into an event space. They aim to host events such as farmers markets, family movie nights and live music.
The brewery’s partners also have plans to open an upscale restaurant called The Hop Garden inside another building on the property. An opening date for the restaurant has not been set.
Winyah Bay will begin distributing its beer in the coming weeks. Runyan said he hopes to sell Winyah Bay beer all over the Grand Strand.
“We’re very optimistic and very excited that our (distribution) partners are going to help walk us through that … and be a real big success.”

A craft beer fan and teacher from Cincinnati, Chase Runyan started brewing in his house by tinkering with kits and learning how to bottle the beer after fermentation. After making five or six batches each year, Runyan built up a good-sized collection of equipment that he stashed in a storage unit when he moved to Georgetown in 2017.
In the meantime, Runyan was enjoying a brew at Buzz’s Roost on Georgetown’s Front Street while wearing his Cincinnati Bengals merch. Also originally from Cincinnati, restaurateur Trevor Day stopped into Buzz’s where he struck up a conversation with Runyan centered around their mutually favorite sports team.
As Runyan had recently cleared out his storage unit, he realized how much brewing equipment he had and asked his new buddy, Day, if he could use his garage on weekends to practice his hobby. After time, trial and error, Runyan perfected his systems and when Day tried one of his concoctions, he exclaimed, “Dang man, we could sell this!” So after extensive research into
consistency, legalities, quality control and more, Runyan started brewing in a small storage space at Buzz’s that he and Day converted into a tiny brewery.
Fast forward four years and Runyan is now the brewmaster at Georgetown’s first brewery, Winyah Bay Brewing, named for the nearby bay. “Georgetown had a niche for a local craft brewery to tie in with the neighborhood, its residents and rich history,” Runyan said, adding that Winyah’s logo with the lighthouse was strategically designed as a nod to the locality. Further, the brewery is located inside a handsome 19th century brick carriage house located at 932 B Front Street, which is also accessible from King Street.
The range of selections that are offered at Winyah Bay Brewing depend on the season, as well as what styles are most popular with regulars and visitors. According to Runyan, four or five flagship flavors will be mainstays on the menu, while four or five additional options will be
available based on seasonality. The open tap room includes high tops, bar space and leaning ledges that invite patrons to sample brews while immersing themselves in the brewery. “We are excited to bring this concept to Georgetown,” Runyan said. “A lot of work has gone into this project and it’s been very rewarding.”
Runyan shared that behind the scenes, a day in the life of a brewmaster begins by prepping a recipe with the malt already milled and put into a grist case (a vessel for storing cracked grain before adding it to the brew kettle), while ensuring the equipment’s system is dialed in to the correct temperatures. Once the process is complete, Runyan resets the system and cleans it out before making the next batch.
“Essentially the life of a brewer is more about engineering, technical observation and cleaning,” Runyan explained. “I let the system do the work and am there to make sure it doesn’t falter and that everything is flowing.” And soon, Winyah’s beers will indeed be flowing along coastal South Carolina from Mount Pleasant to Myrtle Beach.

HEMINGWAY — Georgetown interim football coach Tommy Adams seems to have the program headed in the right direction.
The Bulldogs held on for a 34-29 win over cross-county rival Carvers Bay at Big Bear Stadium on Sept. 12 for Georgetown’s second win of the season.
For a program that didn't see a victory from 2021-2023, starting the season with two wins is a welcome change.
“It has nothing to do with me individually,” Adams said. “It’s all of us. These kids have bought in. The coaches, I mean everybody’s bought in. They know we’ve only got 21 guys on the roster. They don’t have a choice. They have to fight … We’re setting the foundation. That’s all we’re doing.”
Late in the first half, Carvers Bay seemed to gain momentum after a defensive lineman picked off Georgetown quarterback Zach Krause and took it 40 yards to the house to put Carvers Bay up 21-14 with 4:43 left in the second quarter.
However, Georgetown was able to knot the score back up at 21-21 when Krause hit wide receiver Jackel Joye for a 3-yard touchdown pass as the first half clock expired.
Georgetown got gutsy right off the bat in the second half, attempting an onside kick. It worked to perfection. The Bulldogs were able to take the lead thanks to an 8-yard touchdown run by running back Trenton Parker, making it 28-21 with 11:27 to go in the third quarter.
On Georgetown’s next drive, Parker got the Bulldogs in the end zone again, this time on an 80-yard touchdown run that included a nifty spin move to dodge a defender. That put Georgetown up 34-21 with 9:30 to go in the third.
After Carvers Bay turned the ball over on downs, Georgetown went on a clock-eating drive that began late in the third and ended with 5:10 left in the game when Carvers Bay blocked a Krause field goal attempt.
Carvers Bay was able to cut the lead to 34-29 with 3:42 remaining in the game when quarterback Clark Jones’ pass was tipped by a Georgetown defender and caught in the end zone by Bears wide receiver Mekhi Bromell.
