In Spartanburg, SC, you can hit the ground running – or biking or walking – thanks to an ever-growing trail system that accommodates both cyclists and pedestrians. Spartanburg County Parks Department Director Jon Woodsby says that creating and connecting trails to various neighborhoods, parks and businesses throughout the area has been a priority for years.
“Trails and greenways have been by far the No. 1 recreational amenity that the public wants,” Woodsby says. “Regardless of your age or ability, you can use a trail. It opens up activities for a lot of people, whether for fitness or just as a way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. There is also the idea of connectivity, so people can get to various places without using a car. We’re working very actively to create trail segments that connect people to various points of interest.”
Here is a look at some of the must-visit trails in Spartanburg, SC, and one still to come.

Known locally as “The Dan,” this is the most extensive urban trail network in the Spartanburg, SC, region. Under the direction of PAL (Partners for Active Living), The Dan offers 24 connected miles, with a goal of extending it to 55 miles total.
“These beautiful trails are scattered throughout the city,” says Sophi Schwartzbauer, PAL events and strategic communications manager. “They’re surrounded by trees, they run along rivers, and they connect our communities. You’re able to be in nature and escape the hustle and bustle, but you’re still in the city limits.”
Though it is slightly less than 2 miles, the Mary Black Rail Trail has had a big impact on Spartanburg, SC. This is essentially the trail that started The Dan, providing a paved pathway linking several neighborhoods to downtown.
“It’s a trail that leads to numerous stops if you want to make a day of it,” Schwartzbauer says. “There are multiple parks along the trail, including a dog park and a bike park with dirt trails and jumps. There are restaurants and shops. It’s centrally located and really captures the entire community.”
As one of the newer segments of The Dan, the River Birch Trail includes a crossing of Lawson’s Fork Creek, making it easier for neighborhood residents in the area to reach the nearby Drayton Mills entertainment district.
“The tree canopy on that trail is beautiful, and the river running along the trail creates a serene atmosphere,” Schwartzbauer says. “Whether you’re biking or walking, you’re able to get in your exercise and stop at some fun spots along the way.”
The paved River Birch trail leads into the natural surface Cottonwood Trail, creating a nice balance for people who enjoy both walking and hiking. There are more than 5 miles of trails within the 115-acre Cottonwood Trail Preserve, including a boardwalk that passes over 20 acres of wetland.
More than 20 developed trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding can be found within this 7,000-acre wooded park, located less than 10 miles from Spartanburg, SC. The highlight is the 12.6-mile Palmetto Trail, which extends south toward Glenn Springs, running at times along Kelsey Creek and passing the remains of several old homesteads.
Located just outside of downtown Spartanburg, Duncan Park has 6 miles of mountain biking trails that were developed by Bike Worx and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association. There is also a mile-long hiking trail that leads to the 14-acre Duncan Park Lake and a newly added dock and kayak rental kiosk.
“It’s a two-in-one opportunity,” Woodsby says. “You can go for a walk, then go kayaking, then walk back to your car.”
Woodsby says the most used trails within the Spartanburg County Parks System are at Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park in Boiling Springs and Tyger River Park in Duncan. McMillian has a paved loop trail, though several sections connect to the woods along natural-surface trails. Tyger River Park has a paved loop trail, too, with the added feature of periodic fitness stations for those seeking a more intense workout.
On the horizon is a trail that will stretch toward the horizon. The proposed Saluda Grade Rail Trial will run for 31 miles along an old Norfolk Southern railroad corridor. It will begin approximately 12 miles north of Spartanburg in Inman and extend into North Carolina, passing the waterfalls of the Pacolet River gorge and peaceful scenery along the Green River.
“It’s going to be huge for this region,” Schwartzbauer says. “It will be another opportunity for people to travel to some of their favorite places without having to get into a car. That’s good not only for quality of life, but also for overall physical health.”

The industrial real estate market in the Greenville-Spartanburg metro area appears to be rebalancing after a 3-year construction tear, according to a new report by Colliers, a global commercial real estate firm.
Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina's largest metro, doubled its rate of new residents arriving during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the state and close to the front of the pack nationally.
In the third quarter, industrial vacancy fell to 11.06 percent — the lowest level this year. That was coupled with about 944,413 square feet of net absorption, the report said.
Nearly 36.5 million square feet of industrial space has been delivered in the market in the last three years, which Colliers said has kept vacancy high relative to historical averages. About 4.4 million square feet remain under construction, which is lower, year-over-year.
Nevertheless, steady-state leasing volume has increased, the report said. Half of the market’s vacancy remains concentrated in newer speculative buildings, but in-market tenants are starting to trade older, Class C and Class B structures for newer Class A buildings.
“Continued high activity and overall market interest from distribution and manufacturing prospects portend strong absorption through 2025 with labor issues at the Port of Charleston the primary threat,” the report said.
New tenants were announced for the mixed-use village at Hartness, the 480-acre luxury planned community east of Greenville.
Brio Primary Care, Wine House, Chestnut Coffee House and Cork Beauty Bar will occupy a new, two-story, 12,000-square foot building at The Village Center at Hartness.
“The Village Center was conceived as a hub for entertainment and daily conveniences,” said Sean Hartness, CEO of Hartness Development. “We're thrilled to bring these celebrated businesses to Hartness and advance our vision for an innovative mixed-use village that seamlessly integrates natural and built amenities.”
The village is walking distance to Hotel Hartness, Spa H and Patterson Kitchen + Bar, and it features a farm, grand lawn, sports garden, resort-style pool complex, and a 180-acre nature preserve with 10 miles of trails.
Hartness was founded by members of the Hartness family, who in the 1940s acquired the bottling rights to Pepsi-Cola in Greenville. They later expanded into a global company and sold Hartness International in 2009.
Tony Smith, a key leader in the economic development of Greenville County, has retired after 16 years of service with the Greenville Area Development Corporation.
A senior project manager, Smith’s expertise directly led to $2.6 billion in capital investment and the creation of 11,300 jobs in the area, the GADC said in a Nov. 4 news release. He has more than 25 years of experience in economic development, on topics like site selection, incentive negotiation, industrial site development, and strategic planning.
Since 2008, Smith has worked to attract and develop key industries in the region, from automotive, advanced materials, aerospace, bioscience, and life sciences, where he has served as GADC’s lead recruiter.
“It has been a privilege to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team,” Smith said in the news release. “Together, we’ve helped shape Greenville into the vibrant and growing community it is today. I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished and am excited to see what the future holds for GADC and Greenville County.”
Harbor Freight Tools, a tools and equipment retailer, announced it will invest $30 million and create 36 new jobs in Piedmont.
The company will lease a 76,171-square-foot research, development and innovation complex in Anderson County, the governor’s office announced. The property will consist of office space, research and development labs, and a warehouse for the design, development and testing of tools.
Founded in 1977, the company sells value-priced but high-quality tools and equipment, including hand, power, automotive and industrial tools. It first established a South Carolina operation in Dillon County in 2002.

While there are plenty of paid attractions you can visit with your family, if you are looking for some budget-friendly fun, and admiring the work of homeowners, you have come to the right spot.
We have separated light displays in the Upstate into several easy-to-follow routes. Do them all in one night, or turn them into several nights of fun. Throw your fuzzy jammies on, grab the tumbler of hot chocolate, popcorn, and hit the road.
