What is an eyelid lift?

A person's eyes are a unique component of the face that deserves to be visible; however, an excess of skin on top or around the eyes can produce an unflattering facial appearance. Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Kenneth Farr performs eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) to reduce excess skin and rejuvenate the lower and/or upper eyelids, creating a softer look. So many men and women receive eyelid surgery at VIP Cosmetic Surgery to eliminate saggy eyelids, leading to improved functionality and facial appearance. Upper and lower eyelid surgery creates a softer, younger appearance and can give you subtle yet striking improvements. If you are interested in refreshing your eyes with eyelid lift surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Farr at our practice in Bluffton or Hilton Head, SC.

belpharoplasty techniques

Depending on the nature of the eyelid surgery, general anesthesia or IV sedation will be given. This procedure may be done on the upper eyelid alone, on the bottom eyelid, or a blend of both treatments.

  • Upper
Upper eyelid surgery assists in diminishing loose skin that impairs vision to create a more appealing eyelid appearance. The incision point is often placed along the lash line or natural crease to remove skin.
  • Lower
Lower eyelid surgery is performed to reduce puffy skin under the lower lid. In most cases, an incision is made just under the lash line. Small pockets of fat will be removed first, and then the skin will be delicately lifted to allow for a smoother look.

Blepharoplasty can last up to two hours, depending on whether one or both eyes are being treated. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan several days to rest. Ice packs can help reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The results from eyelid surgery may last a decade or longer, but while they are long-lasting, the aging process does not stop. To continue to enhance your surgical outcomes, facial rejuvenation treatments at VIP Cosmetic Surgery, such as lasers, chemical peels, and fillers, can be paired to create a fresh appearance.

Eyelid lift FAQs

Does an eyelid lift cause visible scarring?

After surgery, scarring is usually not visible because of where we place the incisions. Dr. Farr follows the natural crease of the eyes whenever possible and provides detailed recovery guidelines so patients can reduce potential scarring at home.

Can I expect irritation after an eyelid lift?

Some patients will experience some irritation after an eyelid lift, but this is temporary. Other side effects include bruising and swelling that can be managed with medications and cool compresses. We recommend protecting your eyes from damage to minimize complications.

Will an eyelid lift improve my vision?

An eyelid lift can actually improve your vision, in addition to providing patients with a more refreshed and rejuvenated look. If you have drooping skin in the upper eyelid, Dr. Farr can remove the excess skin and help you see much better.
